The best resource I’ve found for public schools (and have used many times) is GreatSchool.net. http://www.greatschools.net/ From preschool through high school, they’ve got all the schools in your area, or the area you are looking to move to. In fact, if you do have to move, check this site out first, choose the best school in that city and then find a house in that area. A great school can make all the difference for you child and you!
How it works: Click on the School Choice Tab, scroll down to Start Your Search, and type in the city. Then chose “public” “charter” or “private” and hit go. It will bring up a list of all the schools in that area and give a rating. Now this rating system is based on test scores. Test scores shouldn’t be the “be all and end all” measure of a great school, but it gives you something to go on. Also look at the comments left by students and parents, and the way they’ve rated it. Be aware that the star rating is only by people who’ve bothered to rate it…not the site’s rating.
There’s also tabs for “School Environment” “Teacher Experience” “Average Size Classes” and soooo much more.
This site is the first place I’d go…then I’d ask people in the community. Weigh them both and make your decision before you enroll, or before you move to a new area.
